Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection
2012 will herald more than 355 collections in a stellar career. On the eve of his label’s 40th year, the Father of Australian Fashion, George Gross; reflects on where it all started...
“Growing up in Hungary during the communist war was taxing on my childhood, but we made the best of it.
When I was five my family went to a holiday resort on an island in the Danube, in Budapest.
There was a large swimming pool at the resort we were staying at. I couldn’t swim so to teach me my Uncle thought it best he throw me in at the deep end. I managed to splutter and clamber my way to the edge in total panic.
Later on that evening we went to watch an American movie together, the last one to be shown under communist rule.
It starred Rita Hayworth in Gilda singing ‘Put The Blame on Mame’. I was captivated by Rita’s beauty, she was wearing a black satin gown and long gloves and I turned to my father and said “I would jump in the pool for her Dad.”
That night I went home and started to draw dresses in a tribute to Rita.
This was the beginning of my fashion career, I was five years old and perhaps this is why I am known for my evening wear, inspired by Rita Hayworth’s 1940’s glamour.”
Autumn Winter 2012 at GeorgeGross takes its cue from the timeless silhouettes of the 1950s. Slim pencil skirts in a range of gorgeous pastel and dramatic hues create an elegant softness for a refined yet sensual look.
Inspired by a garden filled to the brim with soft pink peonies, George Gross has created a blush pink colour palette beautifully offset by pistachio greens to brighten up a cold winter’s day in classic wool blend tweed.
With belted jackets, pastel hued leather gloves and dyed silver fox wraps to match, the look is Fifth Avenue circa 1955 when ladylike tailoring was de rigueur.
Silk draped dresses, skirts and camisoles feature a muted pistachio and peony floral print to take you from daywear into night.
Gorgeous sequin lace coordinates add some dazzle to any Autumn Winter event. Adjust your dress to match the occasion – a cleverly designed sequin lace dress with detachable sleeves and skirt goes from sweetheart neckline and mermaid hemline to va-va voom cocktail dress in seconds flat.
Sweet and streamlined, George Gross has also added a stunning range of Ottoman shift dresses and long gowns with flattering detailing around the neckline for a more structured yet bold silhouette.
For those wanting to make a strong, sexier statement, the GeorgeGross AW 2012 Collection also features a line of strong shapes in red, black, slate and winter white.
Double-breasted jackets, pencil skirts, and beautifully cut dresses with plunging necklines all feature a black and winter white matchstick fabric that mixes perfectly with fire engine red coordinates and accessories.
A stretch ribbed Wool Zip Dress in black, blush, red or slate offers contemporary lines and the ultimate versatility with detachable zip sleeves, slit zip and pocket detailing adds an extra dose of sophistication. The key look for the season is the stretched ribbed wool two Tone dress.
The simple 50s body-skimming design features contrasting panels to create an optical illusion that redefines the waist. A square neckline and delicate cap sleeves completes the effect. Choose black on black satin or contrasting blush or slate with black panels for effortless style, or go for maximum impact in red with black and stand out from the crowd.
