“I was the youngest of three boys growing up and during the summertime we would go and stay at Nana’s house in Largs Bay in Adelaide. I remember my nana being the warmest, most gentle and loving woman. She only lived a few doors down from the beach and when we arrived and she’s always have a cherry ripe for each of us.
We would literally play for hours on the beach, in the hot Adelaide sun. Huge pieces of kelp and seaweed would wash up on the beach and we’d play hide and seek in it. I was the smallest and found I could curl up in the kelp and remain unseen by my big brothers, occasionally letting out a squeak and then scampering off to find a new hidey hole.
I remember it being an incredibly happy time, filled with joy and laughter. Every day when we arrived home Nana would give us a bush biscuit and we would break it in half and eat it, sitting on the front porch with tanned skin and salty hair.
These days George and I have a house in Henley beach right on the water. George and I walk down from the porch, across the grass and onto the sand. Listening to the ocean, smelling the salt in the air, on warm still Adelaide days I will turn to George and say ‘Its another bush biscuit day today’.
I leave the door on my balcony open at night time and I listen to the ocean, it reminds me of how happy my youth was and it makes me feel incredibly nostalgic. There’s a warmth in my heart when I recall those times with my Nana and my brothers.”
